Mount Fuji, located on Honshu Island, is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24 meters. This active stratovolcano, which last erupted in 1707-1708, is about 100 kilometers south-west of Tokyo and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped for about five months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs, as well as visited by sightseers and climbers. Mount Fuji is a sacred site for practitioners of Shinto. Shintoists consider the mountain a dwelling place for the kami, or spiritual beings, specifically Konohanasakuya-hime, the goddess of blossoms. As such, climbing Mount Fuji is a religious pilgrimage for many and is often undertaken with a guide who is well-versed in the mountain's spiritual significance. Historically, Mount Fuji has been a source of inspiration for many artists and poets. During the Edo period, it became a popular subject in Ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th to 19th centuries. The most famous of these are the 36 Views of Mount Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai, which includes the internationally recognized print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
