Herculaneum is an ancient Roman city located in Ercolano, near Naples in southern Italy. Like Pompeii, it was buried under volcanic ash during the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. However, unlike Pompeii, Herculaneum was preserved under a deeper layer of volcanic material, which remarkably protected wooden structures, furniture, and even organic materials.
