Varenna is one of those places on Lake Como that feels less like a stop on an itinerary and more like a discovery. Tucked into the eastern shore of the lake in Lombardy, Italy, the village is small, colorful, and beautifully quiet. You notice the houses first, painted in warm shades that reflect on the water, and then the rhythm of daily life — an old man watering plants on his balcony, friends meeting in a piazza, ferries sliding in and out of the little harbor. It’s wandering the cobbled streets, lingering over a meal, and walking the Lovers’ Walk at sunset when the light softens over Lake Como. It’s easy to reach Bellagio or Menaggio by ferry, yet Varenna has a slower charm that keeps people from rushing off.
