Founded in 729, the provincial capital of Catania was one of the first Greek colonies on the island and has been heavily influenced by its rulers throughout history, including Romans, Arabs, and Normans. However, the largest impact came from its neighbour, the volcano Etna, which devastated the city and killed 12,000 inhabitants in 1669. But fear not, Catania was rebuilt in the Baroque style and preserved to this day, complete with large boulevards and squares.
