Poveglia Island is a small, abandoned island located in the Venetian Lagoon between Venice and Lido in northern Italy. Often referred to as one of the most haunted places in the world, the island has a dark and layered history. During the Roman era, it was reportedly used as a quarantine station for plague victims, and later in the 18th century, it again served as a confinement site during outbreaks of disease. In the 20th century, a psychiatric hospital operated on the island until its closure in 1968.

Today, Poveglia remains officially closed to the public and largely uninhabited, with crumbling buildings, overgrown vegetation, and a decaying bell tower dominating the landscape. Its eerie atmosphere, tragic past, and isolation have fueled countless legends and paranormal stories, making it a subject of fascination for dark history enthusiasts.
