This city is a true gem, as it is home to Sweden’s naval base that was established over 300 years ago. You can explore the well-preserved architecture and city plan that impressed UNESCO, resulting in the city being designated as a World Heritage site in 1998. Karlskrona is built on several islands, situated in an archipelago that UNESCO has designated as one of seven biosphere reserves in Sweden. The town stands on more than 30 islands, with the centre situated on the island of Trossö – 6 km out in the archipelago! In the summer months, you can take advantage of the free car ferry to Aspö and hire a cycle to discover the island.
