Welcome to San Jose, a city steeped in history and culture! Millennia ago, the Ohlone Native Americans called this land home, and in 1770, Spanish explorers arrived, marking the beginning of a new era. Fast forward to 1777, and California's first white settlement, El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, was established. From there, San Jose's rich history unfolds, shifting from Spanish to Mexican influence until the United States gained California in 1848. For close to two centuries, San Jose thrived as an agricultural community, with the Del Monte cannery as its primary employer and the first commercial broccoli farm in the United States. The city even earned the nickname "The Valley of Heart's Delight" for its sweet-smelling orchards. However, with the rise of urban sprawl and the burgeoning technology industry in the 1970s, San Jose's farming role began to wither. But San Jose's growth campaigns in the 1950s and 1960s, led by city manager Dutch Hamann, created suburbs that paved the way for the city's economic development. By the 1990s, countless high-tech businesses had sprung up, and San Jose became known as the "Capital of Silicon Valley.
