Welcome to Mishawaka, the "Princess City" of Indiana! Legend has it that Mishawaka was named after a Shawnee Native American princess who survived a brutal attack by a jealous Pottawatomie Indian, Grey Wolf. The city is home to Lincoln Park, where you can find a bronze marker that commemorates Mishawaka's heroic tale.
In the early 1800s, the discovery of bog iron deposits led to the founding of St. Joseph Iron Works, which eventually merged with Indiana City and two other small neighboring towns to form Mishawaka. Although the iron deposits were eventually exhausted, the city's economy shifted towards manufacturing, which remains a major part of the city's industries today.
Mishawaka is home to major industries such as Dodge Manufacturing Co., Bayer Inc. (healthcare), Nyloncroft (injection molding), and Janco Engineered Products. The city is also a hub for agriculture and transportation, thanks to its location on the St. Joseph River, railways, and major U.S. Interstates 80 and 90.
If you're a student or a fan of college sports, you'll be delighted to know that Mishawaka is close to both Bethel College and Notre Dame University. So come and explore Mishawaka, a city with a fascinating history and a thriving economy!
