Iron County was originally colonized by followers of Brigham Young and named after the iron deposits found in the area. Although farming and agriculture were the main economy after the iron foundry failed, tourism became a major force in the area after the opening of Brian Head Resort in 1964. Today, Brian Head Resort has undergone several improvements and is a favorite destination for residents of nearby metropolitan areas like Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
