A little about Sonamarg
Sonamarg, a popular hill station positioned in the state of Jammu & Kashmir, rests at an altitude of 2740 m above the sea level. Girdled by mountains engulfed in snow, the town of Sonamarg lies before the Zoji La Pass. Sonamarg when translated means the meadow of gold. This small mountain city set in a scenic position is the starting point for a range of hikes and adventures into the girding peaks, glaciers, and valleys. As the snowfall gets heavier during the winter months, this village remains uninhabited and inapproachable. It's one of the most charming places to visit in Kashmir. The best time to visit Sonamarg is during the summers from the month between April and October when the weather is warm and pleasant. Sonamarg is the base of a major trek called the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek that passes along several mountain lakes – Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar, and Gangabal. Sonamarg also serves as a base for the yatra to the Holy Cave Shrine of Shri Amarnathji, during Sawan Purnima.
