Welcome to Minsk, the capital of Belarus - a city that has rebuilt itself several times, most recently after the Second World War when the Nazis reduced it to rubble. Today, it is a metropolis of nearly 2 million people that embraces its own unique brand of modernity. As you walk along the huge Francysk Skaryna, you will find major pieces of architecture including the Main Post Office and the GUM department store. You can also head to the haunting Museum of the Great Patriotic War on October Square to learn about the city's past. Minsk is a city of reinvention, where nostalgia of Stalinist buildings and Soviet parks meets contemporary art galleries, stylish bars and excellent local eateries. Walking along the banks of the Svisloch River is quite beautiful in the summer, particularly if you start your walk from the Old Town. This city has a fascinating past and a lot of strange footnotes from history have been written here. For instance, Lee Harvey Oswald, the man responsible for assassinating JFK, defected to Russia and lived in Minsk. The apartment where he lived on Ploscha Peramohi still stands.
